The Community Development Department is located in the Municipal Services Building at 110 East Laurel Avenue and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The department is responsible for managing new development and infill development throughout the community and staffs five boards and commissions, each of which is responsible for a different aspect of development ranging from the initial planning through the issuance of a Certificate of Occupancy. The department is also responsible for the review and approval all construction plans for conformance with applicable building codes as well as conducting site inspections for all projects, including general construction, plumbing, electrical and HVAC mechanical systems. Community Development staff works closely with the Fire Prevention Bureau to ensure conformance with life safety code requirements and with Engineering staff to ensure compliance with drainage, grading and steep slope requirements.

Planner Office Hours
In an effort to serve our customers better, the Community Development Department is pleased to provide Planner Office Hours. During this time, planning staff will be available to meet with Realtors, residents, architects, business owners, contractors and others. No appointment needed. This time is intended to provide an opportunity to ask brief questions and get basic information. For in depth discussions or review of projects, a separate appointment may still need to be scheduled.

Each walk-in customer will be offered a 10 minute time slot. Customers will be assisted on a first come, first served basis.

Barat Campus Redevelopment Information

If you have been by Barat Campus lately, you have noticed that initial work is underway on the site.  The dormitories, gym, theater and the science building have all been demolished, the debris from these structures has been removed from the site and much of it has been recycled. The masonry debris from the buildings was ground and remains on the site with plans to reuse it during the construction of the infrastructure for the new development. Old Main, including the Thabor wing, and the Cooney Library remain on the site. No date has been set for exterior work on these structures at this time.

Preliminary engineering plans for the Barat Woods development are completed and during November and December, the Plan Commission and City Council will hold public meetings to consider approval of the tentative plat of subdivision. This approval will indicate acceptance of the overall plan subject to the resolution of various technical issues. Final consideration of the development will occur after the developer has completed all of the required plans and document consistent with the conditions of tentative approval.  Infrastructure work on the site to support the new development is expected to get underway in the first quarter of 2008.

If you wish to be added to the list of interested parties for this project and receive notices of future public meetings by mail, or for general information on this project, please contact Julie Carpenter in the Community Development Department at Carpentj@cityoflakeforest.com or 847-615-4292.
